Universitas Syiah Kuala and Green Growth Asia Foundation (GGAF) Launch ESCAN on World Youth Day: A Global Leap Toward Sustainability in Higher Education
Banda Aceh, August 12, 2024. In a groundbreaking move that redefines the role of higher education in climate action, Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK), in collaboration with the Green Growth Asia Foundation (GGAF), officially launched the Eco-Campus Sustainability Action Nexus (ESCAN) on World Youth Day 2024.
This international initiative marks the birth of the first global network that unites Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and Teacher Education Institutes (TEIs) under a shared mission: to embed sustainability into the very fabric of academic life.
With the participation of over 40 educators and 200 students from diverse institutions, ESCAN positions USK as a leading force in transforming education into a powerful tool for addressing the climate crisis. Through an integrative, action-oriented framework, ESCAN empowers universities to become not just centers of knowledge, but agents of environmental and social change.
“At USK, we believe sustainability should not be confined to lecture halls or research labs, it must shape the way we learn, live, and lead,” stated the Rector of USK during the opening remarks. “ESCAN reflects our commitment to cultivating climate-literate graduates who are equipped to solve complex global challenges.” ESCAN is built upon four strategic pillars:
Greening Education for a Sustainable Future Embedding sustainability principles into curricula and research, fostering interdisciplinary thinking and equipping students with systems-based approaches to environmental problem-solving.
